Then, chosen at random, a fellow student becomes this victim when she is to receive perhaps the most brutal and horrifying of all fates.

The default leader of this macabre trio directs the physical and psychological terror, even as contention and hostility within the group threatens to jeopardize their twisted plan, culminating in a violent and chilling conclusion."
Cold Storage

As he approaches the scene, he sees the girl of his dreams, dead among the debris. Certain that she is "the one,” Clive will do whatever it takes to keep her by his side. When the victim’s sister and boyfriend arrive, they quickly become unwitting hostages."
Bloodmyth

"Juliet Corman, instructor for a survival training company, invites her sister Holly along to the first course in a new center in Kent woodland, unaware that waiting for them is a killer practicing ancient Celtic methods of human sacrifice."
The Gatekeeper

"A group of youngsters find themselves stranded in the Welsh hills with a weird local and a mysterious American stranger. When they are attacked by flesh eating zombies they must pull together or no one will survive the night."

Comic Review - American Vampire #1 by Scott Snyder, Rafael Albuquerque, and Stephen King

American Vampire

The audio review:

American Vampire is a comic split into two sections, one written by Scott Snyder and one by Stephen King. One would think that King's towering list of accomplishments would override the piece written by Snyder, but I can safely conclude that this is not the case. The two stories that begin in American Vampire #1are both strong, mysterious, and attractive in their own ways.

First up is Snyder's story, "Big Break," about two starlets looking to make it big in the 1920s film industry. The plot centers around Pearl, who gets invited to a special party of producer B.D. Bloch's (perhaps referencing Robert Bloch?), although a mysterious man who has been hanging out by her apartment tells Pearl not to go. But she does anyway with her friend Hattie, discovering a strange room of odd individuals with sharp teeth and gleaming eyes, and Snyder ends the last panel with a screaming Pearl being pounced upon by vicious shadowy creatures.

Snyder's section doesn't have the action one would expect, and yet it still works because of the exposition that he infuses throughout. Some horror comics lack that feeling of knowing the title character, but "Big Break" doesn't fall in this hole because of Snyder's characterization throughout this first chapter. Even then, there's enough creepy atmosphere and suspense to keep the reader wondering just what Pearl has gotten herself into. This is helped by the fantastic opening sequence, which hints at the very gruesome demise of the two featured characters.

The next story is King's, "Bad Blood," which takes place in Sidewinder, Colorado in 1880. King follows the story of Skinner, a bank robber who is on his way to being hanged when he and his band of fugitives crashes the train - but in the getaway, Skinner's bitten by the vampires posing as bankers. All of this is told by a narrator named William Bunting who was at the scene and kept the memories.

King moves back and forth through time throughout the chapter, effectively detailing Skinner's backstory while remaining in the moment as well. Skinner is, surprisingly, the same character as the mysterious man in "Big Break," but it's unclear the connection at the moment. But King's success is in combining action, exposition, and multiple characters into a short chapter that must juggle all three. The violence, horror of the vampires, and iconic Western gun battles are all present as well, making King's opening chapter a great cliffhanger to the issue.

Albuquerque's artwork is spot-on, and it's beneficial to the reader that he illustrates both stories because of the reoccurring Skinner character. Oddly enough, he looks the same in both, casually hinting at the fact that he may not age... because he's a vampire, ya see? But Albuquerque's dusty settings and grisly art, which is well-represented in this issue, help to further the already-effective stories Snyder and King have created, and it's this type of teamwork that will bring readers back for more.

With Snyder's talk of evolving vampire characteristics, plus the cliffhangers present in both stories of this issue, it's hard to not foam at the mouth in anticipation of the next issue. American Vampire is well on its way to becoming another iconic horror comic, and I'll tell you one thing - it's not just because King's name is tacked on the cover.

Moon Minis - The Third Man

The Third Man

The audio review:

This 1949 Carol Reed film started out as a screenplay (and novel, see review here) by Graham Greene, and then developed into a somewhat dark film about the search for Harry Lime (played by Orson Welles). The search is somewhat interesting, but the real draw is the mysticism of Lime himself. It is Orson Welles who stands out in the film, delivering a small but disturbing role who captures the eye and ear throughout the film. His speech, coupled with his telling actions, make him the most enjoyable part.

Reed incorporates a lot of suspense throughout, but the use of the inappropriate zither music distracts from the tension, giving the film a more comedic tone that what was intended. So too does the final chase for Lime in the sewers detract from the pacing; the length of this scene creates a zany cat-and-mouse game that runs for far too long.

The Third Man has a fair share of good and bad elements, but the bad are the ones that shine through in the viewing experience. Unfortunately, the film sits somewhere in the hard-boiled detective genre without having the suspense of what I consider the more successful films.

Book Review - The Third Man by Graham Greene

The Third Man

The audio review:

Graham Greene is working in the mystery genre here with The Third Man, which is a mix between regular detective novels and noir stylings that make for a slightly off-kilter read. One of the major elements of Greene's novel is that it employs a narrator who is telling us a story that was told to him by the protagonist of the story. At times, this device can get confusing, but it's also the most interesting focus of the novel because it navigates around the obstacle of the generic noir voice.

The plot of The Third Man is grim and twisty, as the protagonist Rollo Martins, who is invited to Vienna by his friend Harry Lime, tries to uncover the truth behind his friend's sudden death. He realizes something fishy is going on when he finds that the stories of the people who witnessed his death don't match up, and after some detective work that lands him with Harry's hot dame Anna, Martins uncovers a dearth of secrets, some that Greene uses as political criticism.

Greene does a fairly good job at characterizing Martins, although his use of separating the name into two personalities (Rollo does one thing, Martins does another) can become tiresome after a while. The twist with Lime is effective as well, and though I won't tell you what he's up to, I'll say it's a pretty vile racket. But much of The Third Man is rather forgettable - it has a lack of striking features, so its short length is a benefit for the reader. Greene has crafted a good book, but one that's a bit unremarkable.

Movie Review - The Box (2009)

The Box

The audio review:

Director Richard Kelly has formed a cult fan base due in large part to his work on Donnie Darko. While The Box is not a follow-up to this previous work, nor does it have any relation at all, it is still a monumental task to overcome these previous ties with a work that utilizes some of the same creepy atmospherics that Darko had.

The Box is an adaptation of sorts based on Richard Matheson's short story "Button, Button." Where "Button, Button" has stood the test of time is in its depiction of humanity and their greed, a theme that Kelly tries to pull out again and again via new plot twists. Kelly takes the original story and puts his own spin on the events, mixing original ideas in with Matheson's simple narrative to create an eerie blend.

But "Button, Button" isn't as convoluted as Kelly makes The Box, and his simple title undercuts the complexity of the plot within. Cameron Diaz and James Marsden play the two unlucky recipients of a mysterious box, which comes with a request - push the button, kill someone you don't know, get a million bucks. It's that easy, or so says the mysterious man Steward (Frank Langella) who gives it to them. And when Diaz pushes the button on that box, the lives of this family fall into a journey of paranoia and death, encompassing the realms of brain-washing and extraterrestrial contact along with the box's powers. So Kelly strays a bit from the path that Matheson forged, and there's an upside and downside to his originality.

First, the upside. The expansion of the plot gives Kelly the room to run with his spooky theatrics, and the beginning hour or so of the film has a creepy vibe that keeps the viewer on edge. This is helped along by Langella's deformed face, and the mysterious individuals that seem to follow Diaz and Marsden keep the suspension ratcheted up throughout. One could say that the opening of the film is all about the chase, and Kelly uses silence for an unsettling experience.

But the downside, and it's a big one, is that the plot becomes more and more complex so that it's quite difficult for Kelly to wrap everything up cleanly. The abstraction of some of the events, the loss of characters that at first seemed primary to the plot, and the unclarity of the extent of the aliens' powers all culminate in a haphazard conclusion, one that almost insists on repeat viewings for understanding - and even then, I'm not sure that the answers are all fully realized enough to be successful. Don't get me wrong - the plot is not nonsensical, nor is it hard to understand as a whole; but certain elements don't get the attention they require, making the film lopsided.

But it's hard not to get enveloped in Kelly's spirals, and even if his finale is a bit poorly executed, the intensity is there through much of the movie. There is a risk, however, that the audience may not accept the incorporation of the alien artifact - yet Kelly says poo-poo to you, too bad, so sad. He takes the film into unexpected territory, though the twist isn't as surprising as the film suggests it wants you to believe. Your enjoyment will depend on how much you hate the ending; again, Kelly strikes with a like-it-or-not affair. I mostly came out liking it. Will you push the button?

Horror Horizon - April 20

Notable horror DVD releases for next Tuesday:

Beginning of the End

"An attractive reporter (Peggie Castle) investigating the mysterious destruction of an Illinois town stumbles upon a secret government laboratory conducting radiation experiments on vegetables. The lead scientist on the project (Peter Graves) is eager to help find out what happened. Together they discover that giant grasshoppers are behind the devastation. Worse yet, thousands of them are headed toward Chicago! Can they be stopped...or is this the BEGINNING OF THE END? One of the best of the "big bug" movies that played largely at drive-in theaters in the 1950s, BEGINNING OF THE END was produced and directed by the master of mutant monster pictures Bert I. Gordon (Village of the Giants, Earth vs. the Spider and The Cyclops)."
Yep, you betcha - this is a Cold War nuclear film from the '50s, as if you couldn't tell by the giant grasshoppers.
Homecoming

"A former small-town golden boy (Matt Long) and his new girlfriend (Jessica Stroup) come back to visit his hometown and discover his high school sweetheart (Mischa Barton) has developed an unhealthy obsession with him. His ex-girlfriend’s desperation slowly but surely becomes apparent, and all hell breaks loose as she does everything it takes to get him back."
Orlok the Vampire 3D

"Max Schreck is back with his finest fang-to-flesh classic! Orlok, the Vampire in 3D is a newly restored version of Nosferatu. This never-before-seen print is an eerie and disturbing adaptation of Bram Stroker's Dracula. Shortly after its 1922 premiere, Murnau's masterpiece became the subject of a bitter lawsuit. As a result, all known copies of this bloodsucking classic were destroyed. Or so it was believed ... Eighty-seven years later, Quality Cheese Productions unleashes this unnerving stereoscopic nightmare. Prepare for a filmic feeding frenzy of fright!"
If anyone has seen this, please let me know how it is.

Spring Break Massacre

"A sleepover party during spring-break turns deadly for six beautiful sorority co-eds. It's up to the college cuties to unravel the mystery of their assailant before the night is over."
Homage to Slumber Party Massacre or total rip-off? Either way, I'd still watch it.

Every Other Day Is Halloween

"EVERY OTHER DAY IS HALLOWEEN is an up-lifting feature length documentary detailing the career and impact of television personality Dick Dyszel, whose popular characters “Bozo the Clown,” “Captain 20” and the iconic “Count Gore De Vol” have inspired generations of fans and artists."
Fraternity Massacre at Hell Island

"A pledge must battle homophobia and a killer clown during his fraternity's Hell Night."
Ominous title is ominous.

Neowolf

"Torn between the girl he loves and the dark side of his dreams of fame, a young musician is seduced by a touring rock band called "Neowolf" with a mysterious past and a hungry habit that comes with the full moon."
Nay-o-wolf.

Knife Edge

"Blissfully happy in her new marriage, Emma gives up her successful Wall Street career and moves with her family to a secluded country estate. But her dream of a perfect life quickly turns into a nightmare when she begins seeing strange and terrifying visions of horrific events from the mansion’s past."
Necrosis

"In 2009, six friends arrive at an isolated cabin to enjoy a long weekend in the snow. An epic snowstorm interrupts their vacation, trapping them on the mountain and resurrecting the haunting ghosts of the Donner Party."
Solar Anus Cinema

"10 short experimental films by Usama Alshaibi. "...his films frequently examine themes of sexuality, desire, 'perversion', race, and gender. His work is characterized by a combination of dark humour and a gleeful celebration of what is deemed by mainstream culture to be deviant behavior..." Jack Sargeant (from Deathtripping: the Extreme Underground). DVD Includes: Traumata, Organ Molly, Self-Contained, Slaughtered Pigtails, Convulsion Expulsion, Runaway, Gash, Patient, Spoiled & The Amateurs."
I'm guessing this is for fans of guro manga or extreme perversion films.

Braincell

"Bizarre tale of freakish experiments occurring within a creepy clinic at the University of Liverpool. A troubled young American woman travels to England to put the pieces of her shattered past back together andunwittingly ravels a nightmarish secret at the school."
Cannibal Lolita: A Love Story

"The murderous owners of a seedy strip club embark on a depraved killing spree in this independent shocker. The Sandman has had his fill of the big city, and now he's ready to experience small town life. Along with his sadistic companion Cannibal Lolita, The Sandman invades suburban homes, indiscriminately slaughtering anyone unfortunate enough to get in their way, and videotaping their horrendous crimes for posterity. When a pair of clueless cops catch wind of the killing spree, they become the latest target of the two twisted killers."
Vampire of Quezon City

"Gruesome and grisly murders are our entry point into the psyche of the Aswang of Quezon City. More a meditation on the workings of a disturbed mind than a detective thriller, it nonetheless shows us a cat and mouse mind game. We watch and squirm in terror as the Pinoy vampire strikes again and again."

Whew, that's a lot of movies.
